According to Foreign Policy (FP) magazine, the metropolitan city of Pakistan, Karachi ranks number 1 in most dangerous mega cities of the world. According to FP, Karachi has 25% more murders ratio if compared to other mega cities of the world and it is the highest.
FP also claimed that the metropolis is swelling in size at a rapid pace as there has been up to 80% increase in the population during the last 10 years. Comparatively speaking, this population is more than the total population of New York City.
Magazine also indicated that due to the terrorism in Northern areas of Pakistan, millions of citizens fled to Karachi during the last 10 years. The ratio of murders and other types of killings are operated and managed by gangs having political ties and associations. In addition, TTP, LeJ and SSP also caused much more intensity to the situation of Karachi. Combined all these gangs and groups are involved in bank robberies, murders, kidnapping and other criminal activities. According to FP, the banned militant organisations still operate freely in Karachi and Government failed to control them.
Afghan war and insurgency in Baluchistan province are the two main reasons that caused the use of ports of Karachi for smuggling weapons and narcotics. The rival gangs fight with each other and with police for several days non-stop. The police get the weapons from the Government while it is quite clear that the gangs get the weapons by smuggling.
According to FP, Karachi has 1,723 gangsters while Mumbai has only 202. In the year 2012, around 2000 people lost their lives in Karachi while the most popular weapon used in Karachi is 9 mm gun. Around 25,000 fake licenses have been issued only for 9 mm pistols during the year 2010 and 2011.
These are the few reasons that crowned Karachi as the most dangerous mega city in the whole world and it has the highest homicide rate per 100000 people in the whole world.
