Ghauri X-1 oil reserve will be producing around 5,500 barrels per day and that makes it Pakistan’s largest oil-producing well. It is expected to contribute its portion to the system by the end of June 2014.
Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) announced with the consent of Petroleum Ministry that a major oil reserve has been located in Dhemak village of district Jhelum in Punjab. The oil well has been named Ghauri X-1. In their public announcement MPCL said that
We have made a major oil discovery in the Sakessar Formation, in the eastern Potohar region in Ghauri X-1 Well
The 3,800 meter deep Ghauri well is a landmark achievement, being the first hydrocarbon discovery in the eastern part of Potohar Plateau
The oil reserve has a total capacity of 22 million barrels and it is estimated that 5,500 barrels per day can be achieved from this well.
The company expects that there are additional reserves around Kussak Formation where oil might be found at a rate of 136 barrels per day. Sources claim that company would start transporting the oil to Attock Refinery near Rawalpindi by the end of this month.
Company has started to lay a 14-kilometer long pipeline from Dhemak oil field to a filling point near Sohawa from where the oil will be transported through tankers to the Attock Refinery.
Company might consider setting up a refinery near Sohawa in order to refine the crude oil if the production from other nearby fields also increased.
