A propaganda website having no announced publisher / whois information or traces of physical address reported that Pakistan along with some other Muslim countries were on top of the list for watching adult material on internet.
This propaganda website tried to relate Pakistan and other Muslim countries to a list of sex-related keywords such as “animals, pigs, donkeys, dogs, cats, horses, cows, goat, snake, monkey elephants” etc.
Some other keywords like “fat sex” and “bird sex” were also said to have been searched from Muslim countries in general and Pakistan in specific.
These are misinterpreted and wrong interpretation of facts. “Bird sex” is one of the least popular search terms and it is searched 100 times lesser than the keyword “sex”.
As a proof, the comparison of four keywords including “bird sex” is shown in the graph which is taken from Google Trends. The keyword “bird sex” against the popular keywords is negligible.
Global ranking for the above mentioned keywords is given in the graph below which shows the country-wise ranking for these keywords.
In the above graphs, it is quite evident that Pakistan is nowhere near the top. The percentage of Pakistan is quite high as it is a Muslim country but to misinterpret the facts and putting the name of a country over top of the list falsely just to ruin the reputation of the country is not the way to do it.
It is not the first time Pakistan has been defamed for things like these. Back in 2010 Fox News delivered similar news and then Google dramatically denied the report.
Google addressed the situation in their statement emphasizing that minor keywords as these having very low searches on their search engine might not be correct due to the very small size of the sample and results are not expected to be statistically sound.
Pakistani media including Express Tribune, The Nation and Pakistan Today were silly enough to publish the story without researching and investigating which is very careless journalism.
It is the duty of the Pakistani journalism and publishing platforms to address the same issue with corrections made so that the nation can be washed off a dirty spot which they do not deserve.
