First natural reserve in shape of oil field was found in Baluchistan in 1952, it was found near Sui gas field. According to report of United States Energy Information Administration, Pakistan has almost 105 TCF shale gas reserves and over 9 billion barrels of oil. Toot oil filed is regarded as the oldest oil producing area in Pakistan where the first oil well was drilled in 1964 during regime of then President Ayyub Khan. The commercial production was started in 1967.

According to Energy Information Administration report, there are over 60 million barrels of oil at Toot area and almost 12 to 15% of them are recoverable. Up to 1986, that field was reported producing 2,400 barrel of oil in a day and later on both oil and to some extent natural gas started to get from these reserves.
Exploration of natural reserves in Pakistan is in-process. For modern exploration, memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in 2005 between International Sovereign Energy (Vancouver-based) and Pakistan’s national oil company named Oil and Gas Development Authority to develop the Toot oil field.

Shale Oil Reservoir Properties and Resources of Pakistan
If talk about natural gas reserves then there are over 885.3 billion cu m gas in Pakistan (reported in 2009). Natural gas reserves in Pakistan are higher than oil reserves. But it is also the fact, these reserves are expected to be used for 20 years only because of heavy factory usage. The biggest natural gas field in Pakistan is Sui Gas Filed, Baluchistan. The first gas field was found in 1952 and commercial exploration was started in 1955. At present, Sui Gas Filed is fulfilling the 35% gas production requirement in Pakistan. Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPPL) is the operator of Sui Gas Field.
