Shakeel Afridi is a well known Pakistani physician. He allegedly helped the CIA run a fake vaccine program in Abbottabad. The purpose was to confirm Osama bin Laden’s presence in Pakistan. This was done by obtaining DNA samples. He and his activities were uncovered during the investigations carried out by Pakistani government in order to find out details about the American raid in which Osama bin Laden was killed. Shakeel Afridi was arrested at the Torkham border. He was attempting to flee Pakistan after a few days when the raid on Osama bin Laden was carried out. On 23 May 2012, he was sentenced to 33 years imprisonment. The reasons were treason, initially believed to be in connection with the bin Laden raid.
As a matter of fact it is not very hard to determine that Dr. Shakeel Afridi let down the whole nation by helping CIA in this operation but the question also raises the point that Pakistani Government allowed Osama bin Laden to stay in the country knowing that US drone attacks were killing dozens of innocent people in different parts of the country.
Pakistani policymakers are fighting Afghan war inside Pakistani borders and the whole nation is paying its cost in form of destroyed economy. If Shakeel Afridi is termed a traitor and he is under the trial, the courts must also carry a trial on those who let Osama bin Laden inside the Pakistan and brought war upon Pakistan and caused deaths of thousands of innocent people in Waziristan and other areas.
To protect lives of the Pakistani people is sole responsibility of the Government. A traitor to the nation Shakeel Afridi is under the trial because he helped US to get to Osama bin Laden but no one is interested in conducting a trial on those who brought Osama bin Laden in Pakistan and started war here.
