Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has chaired a high level meeting in Karachi. In this meeting the law and order situation of Sindh especially Karachi have been discussed. In order to eliminate the problem of illegal/unregistered SIMs and probability of banning or blocking social media applications such as Tango, Whatsapp and Viber etc.
Unregistered SIMs or illegal SIMS issue is not very difficult to control if the mobile companies start action right away without showing any laziness. Once the unregistered SIMs are blocked, people will have to automatically come for registration and new SIMs would only be issued via biometric verification system. This could eliminate all illegal/unregistered mobile SIMs throughout Pakistan.
As far as banning Viber, Whatsapp and Tango in Sindh is concerned, it is claimed that criminals are making wide use of these social media apps for their own purposes.
But there is one huge question to be answered first. IP addresses in Pakistan are not geo-location based. It is impossible to block an app or website in one province or city and allow others to use it in Pakistan. This means that if an app or website is to be blocked in Sindh, it will have to be blocked throughout Pakistan.
In this case the question is, is it worth to ban the whole nation of Pakistan from usage of Whatsapp, Tango and Viber mobile apps? The question to this answer might be revealed soon as currently no decision regarding the future of these apps in Pakistan has been finalized yet.
