Although as an underdeveloped country Pakistan lacks in producing competent scientists, there are number of names which have shined in this field. Asad Ali Abidi is one of them, who have brought the country’s name among the list of those nations whose scientists have been working diligently.
Abidi had done his electrical engineering before becoming the founding dean of the Lahore University of Management Sciences School of Science and Engineering. He achieved distinction on being Chancellor’s Professor of electrical and electronic engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is distinguished as a professor of electrical engineering at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).
As far the early education of Abidi is concerned, he had been educated at Cadet College Hasan Abdal, Pakistan, where he achieved his B.Sc. degree in first-class honours in electrical engineering from the imperial college, London, UK in 1976. Following this completion, Abidi went to the United States to get admission in University of California, Berkeley where he earned his M.Sc degree in electrical engineering in 1978 and a Ph.D in 1981.
Later, Abidi joined LUMS School of Sciences and Engineering as its first Dean and supported in forming the early days of this new institution.
Recognized as an ISSCC top ten author, the Pakistani scientist had served as the Program Secretary for the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) from 1984 to 1990 and had grown as the General Chairman of the Symposium on VLSI Circuits in 1992 and became the Editor of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits during 1992 to 1995.
Abidi is one of the those top elected persons who had been elected for the National Academy of Engineering, and he was honoured as a member of the Third World Academy of Sciences. He had also earned honour to deliver Armstrong Memorial Lecture at Colombia University in 2013.
