Upcoming feature documentary on Punjabi dancers, “Zunn, Showgirls of Pakistan” by Saad Khan. Saad Khan also made one documentary earlier named “Chuppan Chupai” which gain fame internationally based on Pakistan’s gay and transgender. Zunn is Persian language word meaning “Women”. Documentary is in production stage director and producer are fund raising for completion of this feature film. movie is based on story of dancing girls in Punjab controlled by corrupt pimps and boyfriends.
This documentary follows the story of three of these showgirls Reema, Afreen and Nadia. Violent mafia control them and their offstage lives. Reema is old age women who is trying to retire, Afreen, a teenager who want to escape from Pakistan and Nadia is a mentally disabled dancer. Patrick D McDermott said in his review of the documentary.
As the documentary goes into post-production, the documentary makers have asked for contributions on a crowd funded portal to take the film to a big screen.
“Your contribution helps finish off a year of filming. It will give voice to women who are otherwise ignored. We hope that eventually our film will inspire those in power to ensure that showgirls in Pakistan are protected by the law,”
they state on their fund-raising page.
