At last Government of Pakistan came to a reasonable solution reduce the theft cases of Electricity. Pakistan loses at leat 80 Million rupees due to theft cases which is huge amount. The smart meters are used in many countries of the world and I always wondered when Pakistani politicians and technocrats will implement this technology as it’s a very good way to reduce electricity theft. Now lets see what is smart meter and how it will reduce electricity theft.
a smart energy meter will get recharge just like our mobile phones, the consumer will load balance in a card and that card will be inserted in energy meter the energy will remain available till the balance in card is available. As soon the balance in card will finish there will be no more energy until we recharge the card or reload balance in the card. This indeed is a very good solution to the electricity theft and it is being said that this will reduce 30 percent electricity theft in Pakistan and this will be a remarkable achievement by distribution companies.
Initially these meters will be installed in major cities of Pakistan that includes Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar and Hyderabad. The smart meters will be provided by Telenor, Lahore Electric Sypply Company LESCO will initially install 17000 meters in Lahore city.
Such smart steps like installation of smart meters will really prove fruitful for efficient electric supply. These smart meters should first be installed in the areas where people don’t pay electricity bill or physically harass the meter readers.
This technology should have been introduce way earlier but as you know its never late at least Government came to right solution. Slowly these meters will install and it will take 2 to 3 years to install these meters all over Pakistan. So consumers get ready for smart meters.
