The project initiated back in 2007 has finally become a reality after 11 years and the amount allocated for it getting thrice more than what it was officially asked. Ignoring the delays and troubles, the new airport named as ‘Islamabad International Airport’ is good enough to keep Pakistani head high for the while. The newly-launched Y-shaped Airport is not only the biggest airport in Pakistan; it comes around with all the modern day facilities, which makes it stand tall among the top airports across the globe.
After postponing the date for several times, finally, it was 1st of May when Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi inaugurated this airport, situated from around 30 kilometers away from the Blue Area, Islamabad. From the 3rd May onwards, the newly-launched airport will be replacing Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) in Rawalpindi.
The airport which comes out as the product of Rs 105 billion is aimed to host 9 million plus passengers annually; apart from the facilities one can’t deny the spaciousness of this airport as it is the only one in Pakistan to accommodate two double-deck Airbus A380s, which is regarded as the largest airplane in the world as of now.
The first flight at the airport came at 11:15am with boarding PIA CEO Musharraf Rasool along with others.
