The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a notification released on Monday stated that there is high flood alert in the provinces as the Indian government has announced that they have released water into the River Sutlej and the Alchi dam.
On Monday the PDMA Punjab announced that the water level is constantly rising in the River Sutlej. This rise is witnessed after the water in huge amount was released into the river. A similar announcement came from the government of KPK. The government in the alert mentioned that India has released the water without prior notification or the preschedule. The opening of the Alchi Dam outlets can cause heavy floods in the river Indus. The Punjab disaster management has announced that so far the flood water between 125,000 and 175,000 cusecs has reached the Ganda Singh Wala. The department says that their notification is not meant for scaring the people but actually they want the people to take all preventive measures to safeguard their property and their lives.
A similar alert has been issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met). They have forecasted heavy rainfalls in the upper and lower regions close to Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi in the next 72 hours.
Following these alerts, the Chief Minister of Punjab called for an emergency meeting attended by the concerned officials too. He was very clear that all preventive measures must be taken well in time before the things get out of hand. The CM wanted the concerned authorities to sketch out the plan for the security arrangements and other related tasks to handle any kind of the unforeseen. As per the details revealed by the CM office, the meeting was attended by all the higher officials including PDMA MINISTER, irrigation minister, FBR OFFICIAL, IG police. The Deputy Commissioner and Commissioners from Multan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal joined the meeting through the video link.
